Search visibility (also SEO visibility) describes how often and how prominently a website appears in search results for relevant queries. No single visibility number comes from Google. Several measures exist, and they answer slightly different questions.
How is search visibility measured?
Search Console data. Google reports impressions, meaning how often someone saw a link to your site on Google, as well as clicks, click-through rate (clicks divided by impressions) and average position. These values come from Google and cover your own site.
Visibility scores from tools. Tool vendors estimate visibility from tracked keywords. Advanced Web Ranking describes a points-based model in which position 1 gets the most points, a percentage model, an index model and a pixel-based model that looks at the space a listing takes on the screen. Victorious reports that Semrush, Moz Pro, SEOmonitor and Ahrefs each use their own method. Scores from different tools are therefore not comparable, and they depend on which keywords were tracked.
Visibility in AI answers. Rankings and impressions do not show whether a brand is named in answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews. This needs separate measurement.
Visibility versus traffic
Victorious calls visibility a relative metric, a measure of potential reach, and traffic an absolute value. Advanced Web Ranking states that rankings are not the same as on-screen visibility, because AI Overviews can push organic results lower.
Example
A shop sees 2 million impressions a month at an average position of 14 in Search Console. After improving its category pages, it reaches 2.6 million impressions at the same position. Visibility has grown because more queries now show its pages.
FAQ
What is a visibility index? A figure that a tool vendor calculates for a domain from tracked rankings. It is not a Google metric.
