What did Google announce?
Google said the change affects sites where there is only a small amount of visible content above the fold, or where relevant content is “persistently pushed down by large blocks of ads”. Google added that it noticeably affects less than 1% of searches globally, and that sites with ads in a normal amount are not the target. According to reports, Google refreshed the update in October 2012 and February 2014.
What applies today?
Google’s page experience documentation covers related themes, such as intrusive interstitials and good usability. It does not tie them to the 2012 update. Google gives no fixed limits for the share of ads on a page.

A selection, not a complete list. Core and spam updates since November 2021 have their own timeline. Names such as Florida (2003), Pigeon (2014), Possum (2016), Fred (2017) and Medic (2018), as well as Payday Loan and EMD, come from the SEO industry. Their dates rest only on trade press reports and posts by Google employees on X; Google has not published a dated page about them. Last checked: .
Example
On a recipe page, a banner, an ad block and a video player fill the first screen. The actual text starts after scrolling. This is the kind of layout Google described in 2012.
