Mention, citation and link
Mentions and citations are often mixed up. A mention concerns the text of the answer (“For rank tracking, tools such as A and B are used”). A citation is a reference to a source, usually with a link. Both can occur on their own. A brand can be named without its website appearing as a source, and a site can be linked without its brand name appearing in the text.
Claneo adds that mentions can come from the model’s training data or from third-party sources, while citations require that the system grounds its answer in retrieved pages. Google states for its AI features that links to web pages are shown and that no requirements apply beyond the basics of Search.
How is it measured?
Tools usually take a fixed list of prompts that users might realistically ask and send it to several AI systems at regular intervals. They count the answers in which the brand and its competitors appear. The result can be expressed as a share, for example as share of voice. According to vendors such as Semrush and LLM Pulse, answers vary from run to run, so single manual checks give unreliable results.
