AI referral traffic is made of visits that arrive through a link in an answer from an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity. It is a subtype of referral traffic.
How is it measured?
GA4’s default channel group has an AI Assistant channel. According to Google’s help page, a session belongs to it when the medium is ai-assistant or when the referrer is on a list of AI assistants. Some third-party guides, such as Conductor’s, still describe AI referrals as part of the Referral channel. In reports, the channel can be filtered like any other, and landing pages can be analyzed per channel.
Measurement has gaps. Contentsquare points out that AI platforms do not always pass on referrer information, so some visits show up as Direct (see dark traffic). The same source states that clicks from Google AI Overviews cannot currently be separated from regular search traffic. Many answers also end without a click, so measured visits are likely a lower bound (assessment).
Other tools match referrer domains with a regular expression in the traffic report instead, an approach Contentsquare describes for GA4.
AI referral traffic and AI visibility
Referral traffic counts visits. How often a brand is named or linked in AI answers, with or without a click, is a different measurement, usually called AI visibility.
Example
In GA4, the source chatgpt.com appears with the channel AI Assistant. The sessions can be broken down by landing page. (Invented example.)
