What changed with Hummingbird?

Google’s ranking-systems guide describes Hummingbird as a major improvement to its overall ranking systems and dates it to August 2013. According to reports, Google announced it publicly in late September 2013. Reports describe it as a move towards understanding the meaning of a whole query rather than matching individual words, which helped with long, conversational searches.

Unlike Panda or Penguin, which responded to specific quality problems, Hummingbird affected the engine as a whole (Brafton).

Later systems continued this direction. Google lists RankBrain, BERT, neural matching and MUM as AI systems that match queries and content by meaning. There is no Hummingbird-specific action for site owners today. The term mostly appears in histories of Google updates.

A selection, not a complete list. Core and spam updates since November 2021 have their own timeline. Names such as Florida (2003), Pigeon (2014), Possum (2016), Fred (2017) and Medic (2018), as well as Payday Loan and EMD, come from the SEO industry. Their dates rest only on trade press reports and posts by Google employees on X; Google has not published a dated page about them. Last checked: .

Example

For the query “where can I get a replacement part for my dishwasher”, a page about spare parts for household appliances can match, even if it does not contain the word “dishwasher” in that phrasing.
