The reviews update (first called product reviews update) was a series of announced changes to Google’s reviews system, which rewards reviews and recommendations with insightful analysis and original research. In SEO it has nothing to do with star ratings on Google Maps or Trustpilot.

What does the reviews system evaluate?
Google says the system looks at first-party standalone content such as articles and blog posts that give a recommendation, opinion or analysis. This covers single-item reviews, head-to-head comparisons and ranked lists, about products, services, media or places. It does not evaluate reviews that visitors post in a product’s review section.
The system mainly works at page level, and sites with large amounts of review content can be assessed more broadly. Google lists eleven supported languages, including German and English.
The first product reviews update came in April 2021 for English. The April 2023 update (April 12 to 25, 2023 according to the status dashboard) expanded the scope beyond products to services and other topics. The status dashboard lists updates through November 2023, which started on November 8, 2023. Google then said the system is improved at a regular and ongoing pace and stopped posting updates. Today Google still lists the reviews system as an active system in its guide to ranking systems.

A selection, not a complete list. Core and spam updates since November 2021 have their own timeline. Names such as Florida (2003), Pigeon (2014), Possum (2016), Fred (2017) and Medic (2018), as well as Payday Loan and EMD, come from the SEO industry. Their dates rest only on trade press reports and posts by Google employees on X; Google has not published a dated page about them. Last checked: .
Example
A comparison of robot vacuums with own measurements, photos and the downsides of each model matches what Google describes as the target. A list that copies manufacturer text matches it less (an illustration, not a Google rule).
