Review schema is structured data that describes a review or an aggregate rating of an item. Google can use it for review snippets, the star ratings and short excerpts shown next to a result.

What does Google require?
Google lists the supported item types as books, courses, events, local businesses, movies, products, recipes and software apps, among others. A review needs an author, the itemReviewed with its name, and a reviewRating with a ratingValue.
Google restricts self-serving reviews: an entity that reviews itself on its own site cannot get the star feature this way. For local businesses and organizations, ratings must come directly from users rather than from human editors. As with all structured data, display in results is not guaranteed.

Example
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Review",
"itemReviewed": { "@type": "Product", "name": "Trail running shoe" },
"author": { "@type": "Person", "name": "Alex Doe" },
"reviewRating": { "@type": "Rating", "ratingValue": 4, "bestRating": 5 }
}
</script>
