SERP (search engine results page)

Also known as: SERPs, search engine results page, search results page

SERP stands for search engine results page, the page a search engine such as Google or Bing shows in response to a query. A SERP combines organic results, ads, and other elements like images, videos, question boxes, and AI-generated answers. The plural is SERPs.

What is on a SERP?

Google documents the building blocks of its results in a visual elements gallery. A standard text result has three parts. The title link sits on top, the snippet below it summarizes the page, and an attribution area shows the favicon, site name, and visible URL or breadcrumb. Depending on the page, a result can also carry a date, sitelinks, or rich attributes such as review stars.

Beyond text results, Google shows rich results that rely on structured data, image and video results, and exploration features. Two common ones are the related questions box (People Also Ask) and related searches. AI Overviews add a generated answer with links to sources above or between the organic results. Google rolled them out in the US in May 2024. Google also runs AI Mode, a separate conversational search view.

Paid ads appear on the same page and are labeled as sponsored. SEO deals with the organic results, while search advertising covers the paid ones.

Why does every SERP look different?

The query decides which elements appear. A question about opening hours tends to bring up a business profile with a map, a product query brings shopping results, and a definition query often triggers question boxes or an AI Overview. Google also states that location, language, and device affect the results. A search for “bicycle repair shop” in Paris returns different results than the same search in Hong Kong.

This has practical consequences for SEO. When an AI Overview, several ads, and a question box sit above the first organic result, that result appears much lower on the screen than on a plain results page. A ranking position only tells half the story without the layout of the SERP around it.

Example

The term “SERP” itself shows how much a results page depends on interpretation. In an October 2026 pull from google.com, the top results mixed two meanings. Some pages explained search engine results pages, others covered the Supplemental Executive Retirement Plan, a US employee benefit. The People Also Ask box asked both “What does SERP mean?” and “What does SERP stand for in benefits?”. A page targeting the SEO meaning has to make that meaning clear in its first sentence.

Common mistakes

  • Checking a SERP only in your own browser. Personal settings, location, and device shape what you see. Compare SERPs with fixed parameters (country, language, device).
  • Counting characters for snippets. Google says there is no fixed length limit for meta descriptions. Snippets are truncated as needed, typically to fit the device width, so character counts in tools are estimates.

FAQ

What does SERP mean? Search engine results page. It is the list of results and features a search engine returns for a query.

What is the difference between SEO and a SERP? SEO is the work of improving a website so it shows up in organic results. The SERP is the page where those results appear.

What are SERP features? Any result element beyond the classic blue link, for example featured snippets, People Also Ask, image packs, video results, sitelinks, and AI Overviews.
