Sitelinks search box

HistoricalAlso known as: sitelinks searchbox

The sitelinks search box was a search field that Google could show under the result for a brand’s homepage, letting people search within the site directly. Google retired the feature in November 2024.

What applies today?

Google announced the removal on October 21, 2024, in a post titled “Farewell, Sitelinks Search Box,” and stopped showing the box globally starting November 21, 2024. Google gave declining usage as the reason and stated that rankings and regular sitelinks are not affected. Some pages in the search results still describe the box as active. Those descriptions are outdated.

The box was controlled with WebSite markup and a SearchAction. Schema.org still defines SearchAction as an action of searching for an object, with target for the search URL.

To search within a site on Google, the site: operator works, for example site:example.com backpack.

Example

HTML
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "WebSite",
  "url": "https://example.com/",
  "potentialAction": {
    "@type": "SearchAction",
    "target": "https://example.com/search?q={search_term_string}",
    "query-input": "required name=search_term_string"
  }
}
</script>

The markup remains valid schema.org vocabulary. It no longer triggers a display in Google Search. According to Google, you can remove it but do not need to, because unsupported structured data like this causes no issues in Search and no errors in Search Console.
