Usability is how easy and effective an interface is to use. For a website, it describes how well visitors reach their goals without errors or detours. It is a quality of the design and not a ranking factor by name, although parts of it appear in Google’s guidance on page experience.
How is usability defined?
Nielsen Norman Group defines usability as “a quality attribute that assesses how easy user interfaces are to use,” with five components:
- Learnability, how easily people complete basic tasks the first time.
- Efficiency, how fast they work once they know the design.
- Memorability, how easily they find their way again after a break.
- Errors, how many they make, how serious they are and how easily they recover.
- Satisfaction, how pleasant the interface is to use.
According to reports such as Wikipedia, ISO defines usability through three criteria: effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction in a specified context of use.
Usability and SEO
Google lists six questions about page experience. Among them: good Core Web Vitals, secure delivery, display on mobile devices, no excessive ads, no intrusive interstitials and a clear difference between main content and the rest. Google also states that Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems, while other page experience aspects “don’t directly help your website rank higher.” They matter for visitors, and satisfied visitors are what its systems aim to reward.
Example
A shop check-out asks for a postal code in a field that rejects spaces and shows no hint. Some users abandon the form. A usability test with a few participants would show this as an error pattern.
Common questions
How is usability tested? Observing users while they complete representative tasks. Nielsen Norman Group recommends about five users per round and several small rounds rather than one large study.
