Brand mentions are places on the web that name a brand or domain. With a link they are linked mentions, without one they are unlinked mentions. In SEO and now in AI search, people debate whether and how mentions affect visibility.
What is documented and what is not?
Google’s page on how search ranks results says that one quality factor is whether other prominent websites link to or refer to a piece of content, which it calls generally a good sign that the information is trustworthy. The documents read for this entry do not state whether unlinked mentions count as a ranking signal.
For AI answers there is a study. In May 2025 Ahrefs analyzed 75,000 brands and looked at which factors move together with a brand being mentioned in Google AI Overviews. The strongest relationship was with brand mentions across the web, with a correlation of 0.664. Brand anchors reached 0.527 and branded search volume 0.392. Ahrefs states that the study shows correlation and not causation. The sample was filtered to domains with a Domain Rating above 40 and branded keywords with at least 800 monthly searches, and the study covers AI Overviews only.
How do teams use mentions?
Teams track mentions with monitoring services or search alerts. When they find a mention without a link, some ask the site owner to add one. This practice is called link reclamation.
Example
A trade magazine writes in a test, “Example Inc. offers warehouse software.” The name appears with no link, which is an unlinked mention. If the text links to the Example Inc. website, it is a linked mention.
