A conversion is an action by a visitor that has value for the business, such as a purchase, a sign-up, an inquiry or a download. The word also means unit and currency conversion, which is what the search results show. In online marketing it describes turning a visitor into a customer or lead.
How is a conversion defined?
Each business decides what counts. MarketingSherpa describes a conversion as the point at which the recipient of a marketing message performs a desired action, which can be a simple step such as opening an email or a final one such as a purchase.
Google Ads defines a conversion page as a page a person reaches after completing an action you value, for example a purchase confirmation or a thank-you page. A conversion tag on that page reports the completed action to Google Ads.
In Google Analytics 4 the equivalent is the key event, an event that measures an action particularly important to the success of your business. You mark a collected event as a key event. In 2024 Google separated the names, so GA4 uses “key event” while “conversion” now refers to what Google Ads counts. Key events can be used to create Google Ads conversions.
Micro and macro conversions
According to reports, many teams separate main goals, such as a purchase or a signed contract, from smaller steps that lead to them, such as a newsletter sign-up or adding a product to the cart. The terms macro and micro conversion are industry usage, not Google terms. B2B sales typically need several small conversions over time before a deal closes.
Why it matters in SEO
Organic traffic only creates value when visitors act. SEO work is therefore often judged by conversions rather than clicks or rankings alone. That requires clearly defined goals and working measurement, which is often set up in Google Tag Manager.
Example
A seller of hiking boots counts the purchase confirmation as the macro conversion and the newsletter sign-up as a micro conversion. In one month the shop records 90 purchases and 340 sign-ups. (Illustrative numbers.)
