Event schema is structured data that describes an event, such as a concert or workshop. Google uses it for its event experience in Search and Maps. The term also appears in software engineering for event data formats, which is a different topic.

What does Google require?
Google requires name, startDate (ISO 8601 with time zone) and location with a full address. The name is the event title, not the venue.
Eligibility is narrow. A June 2025 update states that events must be bookable by the general public and held at a physical location. Google lists promotions, coupons and business hours as not eligible, and does not support virtual-only experiences, membership-only or invitation-only events. Older guides that describe markup for online events no longer match the current documentation.
Example
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Event",
"name": "City Trail Run 2026",
"startDate": "2026-05-16T09:00:00+02:00",
"location": {
"@type": "Place",
"name": "Central Park",
"address": { "@type": "PostalAddress", "streetAddress": "1 Park Rd", "addressLocality": "Springfield", "postalCode": "12345", "addressCountry": "US" }
}
}
</script>
