Pageviews count how often pages of a website were viewed. Every view increases the count, including repeated loads of the same page by one person. GA4 calls the metric “Views” and defines it as the total number of app screens and web pages users saw, combining pageviews and screenviews.

How do pageviews differ from sessions and users?

A pageview is a single view of a page. A session groups the activity of one visit. In GA4 a session ends after 30 minutes of inactivity by default. A user is a person who triggers one or more sessions, and GA4 reports Active Users as its main user metric, defined as users with an engaged session or with the first_visit event or engagement_time_msec parameter collected.

One visit can contain many pageviews, and a page can accumulate many views from few people. Views per session shows how deep visitors go into a site.

Search Console and GA4 compared
AspectGoogle Search ConsoleGoogle Analytics 4
Visibility in SearchImpression: a link to the site was seen (or potentially seen) in Search, Discover or Newsno own data; once linked, GA4 shows Search Console metrics in dedicated reports
Visit from SearchClick: for most result types, any click that sends the user to a page outside Google Search, Discover or Newsrecords the visit on the site (session, events); clicks from Google Search only through the Search Console link
Sessionno such metricSession: starts with a page or screen view when no session is active and times out after 30 minutes of inactivity by default
Page views (this term)no such metricViews: number of web pages or app screens users saw, repeated views included
Data sourceGoogle's data on how the site appears in Google Searchevents sent by the Google tag (JavaScript) on the site; visits without JavaScript enabled are missing
Delaydata usually available in 2–3 days; the newest data can be preliminaryprocessing can take 24–48 hours; Search Console data appears in GA4 48 hours after collection
Privacyanonymized queries: very rare queries are omitted from the table but included in chart totalsdata thresholds: rows with demographic data or search query information may be withheld when there are too few users; not adjustable
Completenessdata truncation: only the most important rows are stored and shown, the table shows up to 1,000 rows; the most complete list comes from the bulk data exportsampling: if a query exceeds the event quota (10 million events for standard properties), a subset is used and scaled up

Search Console clicks and GA4 sessions count different things, so their numbers differ. Google lists privacy, processing, time lag, time zones (Search Console counts days in Pacific Time) and JavaScript among the reasons. The two help pages give different delays (2–3 days in the Search Console Help, 48 hours in the GA4 Help on the integration). Pageviews in SEO reporting

Pageviews describe what happens after the visit has started. They do not show how people arrived. Search Console impressions and clicks are counted before the visit, and pageviews are counted by your analytics tag after the page loads.

Vendors can define pageviews slightly differently and filter bots in different ways, so numbers from two tools often do not match. A rise in views can mean more interest. It can also come from visitors reloading a page that fails to work properly, so views belong next to other metrics such as engagement rate.

Example

A visitor opens the home page, a category, two product pages, and reloads one of them. That is five pageviews, one session and one user.

FAQ

What is the difference between visitors and page views? A visitor is a person. A page view is one page load. One visitor can create many page views.

How can you increase pageviews? Internal links to related content and fresh, relevant pages encourage visitors to open more pages. Whether more views are useful depends on your goal.
