Pogo-sticking in SEO is the behavior of clicking a search result, returning to the results a few seconds later and clicking another result. The name comes from the pogo stick toy that dominates the search results for this word.

What does it mean for SEO?

Pogo-sticking is usually read as a sign that the clicked page did not answer the query. Typical causes are a page that does not match the search intent, a title or description that promises more than the page delivers, and slow loading. These are interpretations, and the actual reason for a single return to the results cannot be read from the data.

Whether Google uses this behavior for ranking is not settled by an official source. According to reports, Google staff have said pogo-sticking is not a direct ranking factor. Google’s guide to its ranking systems does not mention it. A US court finding from 2024 describes Navboost as a signal that memorizes which documents users clicked after a query, without describing a return to the results page.

Difference from bounce rate

GA4 defines bounce rate as the share of sessions without engagement. A session is engaged if it lasts longer than 10 seconds, contains a key event or has at least two page views. A visitor can return to Google after 15 seconds without the session counting as a bounce. Pogo-sticking happens on Google’s side, so site owners usually cannot see it in their own analytics (assessment).

Example

Someone searches for “convert shoe size”. The first result opens with a long text about the history of shoe sizing. After a few seconds the visitor goes back and opens a result with a conversion table. From the first site’s view, that is pogo-sticking.
