Dwell time is, in SEO usage, the time between a click on a search result and the return to the results page. The word is also used in logistics, medicine and security. Here it refers to web search. Related terms such as time on page and engagement time measure other things, so numbers from different sources are not comparable.
What is measured?
Dwell time is only visible to the search engine. Website owners cannot see it in any analytics tool.
Time on page is a general name for the time spent on a single page. How it is calculated depends on the tool.
Engagement time is the GA4 metric. It measures the time a page was in focus in the browser, or an app screen in the foreground. Switching to another tab stops the clock. Google notes that very long values, over an hour, are rare outliers on the web.
Is dwell time a ranking factor?
Google’s guide to its ranking systems does not list dwell time or other engagement metrics. Google staff have been quoted as rejecting dwell time as a ranking signal, although those statements reach us through secondary sources. Separately, the court’s Memorandum Opinion of August 5, 2024 in United States v. Google describes Navboost as a system that memorizes which documents users clicked after a query, trained on 13 months of user data. So Google does use click data. The court text does not mention dwell time. According to reports on internal Google documents that became public in May 2024, they list click attributes such as “lastLongestClicks”. None of this confirms dwell time as a separate ranking signal, and the entry takes no side.
For your own pages, engagement time and engagement rate are useful measures independent of that debate.
Example
A visitor reads a recipe for four minutes, then spends two minutes in another window. GA4 reports roughly four minutes of engagement time. A tool that only subtracts timestamps between two page loads would show six. (Illustrative example.)
Common mistakes
- Reading a short visit as a failure. Someone looking for opening hours may be done in ten seconds.
- Comparing values between tools that define time differently.
- Treating dwell time and GA4 engagement time as the same measure.
FAQ
What is dwell time? In SEO, the time a visitor spends on a result before returning to the search results.
Can I measure dwell time? Not directly, since only the search engine sees it. GA4 engagement time is the nearest figure you can measure.
