Google Merchant Center is the free tool in which retailers manage their product data for Google. For SEO, the relevant result is the free product listings that Google creates from this data.
How does Merchant Center work?
Retailers create an account, add business information and provide product data. Products can come from a feed file, from manual entry, from a connected e-commerce platform or from automatic detection of structured data on the website, as BigCommerce and Shopify describe the setup. Google states that the tool is free and that products can appear across Google Search, Maps, YouTube and other Google services.
Free listings can show in the Shopping tab, Google Search, Google Images, Google Lens, YouTube, Gemini and the products module of Business Profile. For new accounts they are turned on by default. Google points out that the status only grants permission to show products for free and does not guarantee that they will be shown.
Required product data includes ID, title, link, image, price, description and availability, plus condition for used or refurbished items. For apparel, color, size, age group and gender are required. In many countries shipping settings are required too.
Merchant Center also serves as the basis for paid Shopping ads in Google Ads. The account itself costs nothing, and fees arise from ad campaigns, which are charged per click.
Example
A store with 3,000 products uploads a feed every day. Price and availability in the feed must match the product page, because Google compares both.
Common mistakes
- Feed and product page differ. Google expects prices and other details in Merchant Center to match the online store.
- Shipping and returns not set up. Shipping settings and return policy information on the website are prerequisites for free listings.
- Incomplete required attributes. Missing ID, title, link, image, price, description or availability leaves a product incompletely described. Apparel also needs brand, color, size, age group and gender.
- Reading enablement as a guarantee. The status permits free display and does not guarantee it.
