Google Shopping

Also known as: Shopping tab, free listings

Google Shopping is the area of Google where products from retailers appear with image, price and store. In an SEO sense this means the free (organic) product listings that appear next to paid Shopping ads.

Where do free product listings appear?

Google lists the Shopping tab, Google Search, Google Images, Google Lens, YouTube, Gemini and the products module of Business Profile as places where free listings can show. The listings are built from product data in Merchant Center, from structured data on the website and from crawling the store. Google’s help page for Shopping describes that the platform aggregates data from sellers who submit regular feed updates, and that organic listings are ranked by relevance.

Sponsored listings carry an advertiser label. Google says that advertiser payment may also influence how items are ranked, and Google earns revenue from clicks on those ads. Paid campaigns run through Google Ads and use the same product data.

Free listings require compliance with Google’s product listing policies, return conditions, shipping information and the required attributes (ID, title, link, image, price, description, availability). GTIN and MPN are recommended identifiers in Product markup. Being enabled for free listings does not guarantee that a product is shown.

Example

A retailer of running shoes has product data in Merchant Center and Product markup on the detail page. A search for “trail running shoes men” can show the model in the Shopping tab with price and availability, without a payment to Google.

Common mistakes

  • Feed and store disagree. Google asks merchants to match product data in Merchant Center with the online store, for example prices.
  • Missing shipping and return information. For free listings, Google names shipping settings and return policy information on the website as prerequisites.
  • Required attributes missing. ID, title, link, image, price, description and availability are required for every product, and apparel also needs brand, color, size, age group and gender.
  • Treating enablement as a guarantee. The free listings status grants permission to show products and does not guarantee that they are shown.

FAQ

Is Google Shopping free? Free listings cost nothing. Shopping ads are billed through Google Ads per click.

Do I need structured data? Google recommends using structured data on the page together with a Merchant Center feed, because this increases eligibility for Google experiences. The product data itself comes from the feed or from automatic detection in Merchant Center.
